FIU Law to Kick-off "Project Access" Mentor Program

Miami (October15, 2009) - The Florida International University College of Law and the Hispanic National Bar Foundation (HNBF) will welcome more than 100 high school, college, and law students as they launch the HNBF National Mentoring Program “Project Access” in Miami, which aims at providing further access and opportunity to minority and other traditionally underrepresented groups in the legal profession.

Students will be matched with mentoring attorneys to explore the application processes of college and law school, internships, scholarships, and the real world work of a lawyer.  Students will also have the opportunity to network, win scholarships to pay for bar examination prep, and apply for special summer programs such as the 2009 HNBF Future Latino Lawyers Law Camp.

FIU and the HNBF will kick-off the partnership on Saturday, October 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the FIU College of Law – Rafael Diaz Balart Hall on Florida International University’s Modesto A. Maidique campus, 11200 SW 8 Street in Southwest Miami-Dade County.  This event will serve as an orientation for the mentors and students and will establish the mentor relationships.

Mayda Prego, President of the HNBF stated, “The HNBF is dedicated to empowering the Hispanic community through education. We are thrilled that with a strong partnership with FIU College of Law we can bring quality programs like Project Access to so many students in the Hispanic community.”

The partnership was made possible through a grant from the Law School Admission Council and is part of a larger effort by the FIU College of Law school to implement programming that supports diversity and access.  The College of Law was ranked as the third best environment for minority students in the nation in the new 2010 edition of “The Best 172 Law Schools”.  The faculty at the FIU College of Law were also mentioned in the Princeton Review article as the most diverse law faculty in the nation.
